The Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) established the TIS Champions Club in 2006. The Champions Club recognises TIS athletes who have made a significant contribution to the development of elite sport in Tasmania through their performances and interaction with various levels of the sporting and general community.
The TIS Champions Club recognises athletes who have held a TIS Scholarship for more than five years and achieved exceptional performances on the international stage in their chosen sport. Outstanding performances such as a medallist at the Olympics, World Championships or Commonwealth Games may be considered for inclusion into the TIS Champions Club. To be considered for inclusion an athlete must be retired from international level competition and seen to have demonstrated a high level of professionalism and conduct throughout their sporting career.
The following athletes are members of the TIS Champions Club:

Rebecca Van Asch is one of Australia’s most decorated lawn bowlers hailing from the Invermay Bowls & Community Club and playing over 300 capped games for Australia. Bec joined the TIS in 2004 and remained on scholarship for 18 years until her retirement.
Bec first began playing the sport she loves back in 1998 as a young 10 year old and quickly took the sport by storm having worked her way through the junior ranks before representing the Tasmanian women’s open team.
Bec claimed her first World Title in 2012 when she paired with Kelsey Cottrell to take out the Women’s World Pairs Gold Medal. Four years later, in 2016, she again teamed up with Cottrell along with Krizanic and Scott to claim the World Fours Gold medal and the Triples Gold also with Krizanic and Scott. These girls hold a unique place in the record books securing the double/double of both World and Commonwealth Titles in the triples and fours.
At the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Van Asch joined teammates Carla Krizanic and Natasha Scott as the only Australian lawn bowlers to ever win multiple Commonwealth Games Gold medals after claiming the Triples and Fours titles. These medals accompany Van Asch’s three World Titles.
Van Asch is Tasmania’s only World and Commonwealth Games lawn bowls champion and was named the 2017 Tasmanian Athlete of the Year in acknowledgment of her outstanding achievements.
Joining the TIS in 2014, Wilson moved to the National Training Centre in Penrith in 2017 after winning the women’s eight title and the women’s coxless four title at the Australian Rowing Championships in composite Australian selection boats. Soon after Ciona made her Australian representative debut at World Cup 2 in Linz, Austria, in the five seat of the women’s eight. Then going onto compete at the Henley Royal Regatta the Australian Eight won the 2018 Remenham Challenge Cup.
At the World Rowing Cup III in Lucerne, Switzerland the eight finished 5th before heading to the 2018 World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The eight, with Ciona in the six seat won their heat before finishing third in the final, taking home the bronze medal.
In the lead up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Ciona was part of the senior squad vying for a seat in one of the sweep boats. When the final crews were announced in 2021 after a delayed Olympics Games, Ciona was selected as a travelling reserve.
Matt Bugg has achieved outstanding performances in National and International sailing competitions whilst using the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania and Derwent Sailing Squadron as his daily performance environment. Matt was part of the TIS from 2010 through until 2017 before retiring from international competition in 2018.
Matt’s record in Open Australian 2.4 National Championships is truly incomparable. Internationally, Matt attended all the important regattas with the knowledge and experience he gained seeing his ranking remain in the top three in the world for a large portion of his career.
Between 2015 and 2018 Matt had a purple patch of form finishing on the podium in all five major benchmark events over this period. At the 2015 World Championships in Melbourne, Matt won the bronze medal, a feat he replicated in 2016 in Medemblik, Netherlands. Later that year Matt was selected for the 2016 Rio Paralympics in which he won a silver medal, an incredible achievement.
In 2017, Matt’s good form continued with a silver medal at the World Championships in Kiel, Germany. In his final World Championships, Matt finally won that elusive gold medal by taking out the World Championships in Sheboygan, USA.
