Max had a taste of international racing through 2023 when he competed at the TYR Pro event in American and then the Aquatics World Cups held in Europe where he had several podium finishes. This culminated in an outstanding performance at the Queensland State Championships, where Max became the second-fastest Australian of all time to swim the 200m Freestyle, behind only Ian Thorpe, swimming the first leg of the 4x200m relay.

Securing his spot at the Australian Swimming Trials, Max won his pet event, the 200m Freestyle.
